During the Tang Dynasty, Wang Chengfu, born into an official's family, joined the military and distinguished himself with considerable military achievements.

He was granted an audience by Emperor Xuanzong, who offered him a high-ranking official post. However, Wang Chengfu steadfastly refused, choosing instead to return to his hometown and work as a bricklayer.

When questioned by others about his unconventional decision, he explained that all kinds of work needed to be done. He said that if he were to become an official, he would also have to marry and start a family, thus taking on two major responsibilities ('一身两任' - literally 'one body, two duties'). He believed that even a wise sage would find it challenging to shoulder such a dual burden.
