Story:

During the Warring States period, Shang Yang initiated reforms with the support of Duke Xiao of Qin. After the new laws were promulgated, Shang Yang wanted to ensure that people would trust and follow them.

He ordered a wooden pole, more than three zhang (about 10 meters) tall, to be erected at the South Gate of the capital. He announced that anyone who could move this pole to the North Gate would be rewarded with fifty gold coins.

A bold and strong man came forward, successfully moved the pole, and indeed received the fifty gold coins. Witnessing this, the people believed that Shang Yang always kept his word, and they began to abide by the new laws.
