During the reign of Emperor Ling of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Chen Shi, a minor official, was known for his kindness and impartiality. One night, a thief sneaked into his house and hid on the roof beam.

Chen Shi discovered him but did not order his arrest. Instead, he called his sons and grandsons to his side and lectured them on how to conduct themselves, advising them not to learn from 'the gentleman on the beam.'

Deeply moved by Chen Shi's words, the thief came down from the beam and threw himself to the ground, begging for mercy. Chen Shi, showing compassion, gave him some money and let him go.
