Origin and Story of 人死留名

Wang Yanzhang was a figure during the Five Dynasties period. In his youth, he followed Emperor Taizu of Later Liang in battles, achieving numerous military successes. After Taizu's death, he further consolidated the Later Liang dynasty's power for the last emperor. His contributions were undeniably significant.

However, after Wang Yanzhang's two consecutive defeats in attacking Later Tang, those who had always harbored ill feelings towards him seized the opportunity to slander him to the last emperor. Consequently, Wang Yanzhang was stripped of his military authority. Less than half a year later, the Later Liang dynasty faced imminent collapse and had no choice but to recall Wang Yanzhang.

On one occasion, Wang Yanzhang was captured alive by Tang forces. Emperor Zhuangzong of Later Tang admired him greatly and wanted him to serve as a general. Wang Yanzhang replied, "How can a general serve one state in the morning and another in the evening? Therefore, I beg Your Majesty to grant me a swift death; I shall have no complaints, only feel greatly honored." Although he eventually died, he left behind a splendid reputation.
