During the Song Dynasty, Sima Guang became renowned for compiling 'Zizhi Tongjian'. He served as a Hanlin Academician and was good friends with Wang Anshi, but he did not support Wang Anshi's reforms. He resigned and went to Luoyang to focus on writing.
When Emperor Zhezong ascended the throne, Sima Guang was recalled to the capital to serve as Shangshu Zuo Pushe (Left Prime Minister), and people expressed great joy and relief at his return.
Upon assuming his post, Sima Guang promptly moved to abolish the new policies, a decision that is said to have deeply upset Wang Anshi.
