李郭同舟 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “refers to intimate friends or kindred spirits sharing a journey or an experience, symbolizing deep mutual understanding and companionship”. Literally, “Li and Guo in the same boat”.
During the Southern Dynasties, Guo Tai, styled Linzong, from Jiexiu, Taiyuan, came from a humble background. However, he was eager to learn and traveled extensively to study.
While studying in Luoyang, he met Li Ying, the Prefect of Henan. Li Ying greatly enjoyed his company, and their friendship became a well-known story.
Later, when Guo Tai was about to return home, many scholars from the capital came to bid him farewell. However, Guo Tai chose to travel by boat only with Li Ying. The people who saw them off remarked that they looked like a pair of immortals.
