Story:

During the Han Dynasty, Xu Jing's nephew, Xu Shi, committed murder. The victim's family sought to kill Xu Shi in revenge.

Xu Jing knelt before the adversaries, pleading for his nephew's life, saying: 'His father, my brother, passed away early, leaving only this one son. I am willing to die in his place.'

The adversaries, recognizing Xu Jing as a highly respected and virtuous man in the county, replied: 'You are a great sage of this region; how dare we kill you?' Thereupon, they cast aside their swords and departed.
