During the Spring and Autumn period, a jade carver named Bian He discovered a rough jade stone. He presented it to King Li of Chu, who, believing it to be a common stone, had Bian He's left foot cut off. Later, he presented it to King Wu of Chu, who also dismissed it, leading to Bian He losing his right foot. Only King Wen of Chu recognized its true value, and this jade became known as the 'He's Jade' (和氏璧).

Separately, in the 'state of Han Dong,' a Marquis of Sui (Sui Hou) of the Ji surname saved a snake. In gratitude, the snake spat out a large pearl to repay him, which became known as the 'Sui Pearl' (随珠).

These two legendary treasures, the Sui Pearl and He's Jade, became synonymous with the most precious and invaluable items.
