During the Jiayou period of the Northern Song Dynasty, Su Shi from Sichuan traveled to the capital Bianliang to take the imperial examination. Ouyang Xiu, the chief examiner, saw Su Shi's paper and mistakenly thought it belonged to a friend of his.
Because of this, he awarded Su Shi second place instead of what should have been first. After successfully passing the examination, Su Shi wrote a letter of gratitude to Ouyang Xiu.
Ouyang Xiu, deeply impressed by Su Shi's exceptional talent, sighed and expressed that Su Shi truly deserved the opportunity to distinguish himself (出人头地).
