During the Western Han Dynasty, Sima Xiangru, a talented writer of ci fu, led a very difficult life.
His friend Wang Ji, the magistrate of Linqiong County, invited him to be a guest at the home of the wealthy merchant Zhuo Wangsun. There, Sima Xiangru met Zhuo Wangsun's widowed daughter, Zhuo Wenjun. They fell in love at first sight, expressing their mutual affection through the lute and secretly pledging their lives to each other.
Despite Zhuo Wangsun's strong disapproval, they defied him and opened their own wine shop, beginning a life of hardship together.
