下榻留宾 is a Chinese idiom (chengyu) meaning “to provide lodging for guests”. To host overnight guests. Literally, “To lower a bed and host guests”.
During the Eastern Han Dynasty, Chen Fan served as the Prefect of Yuzhang. He usually disliked having visitors stay overnight. However, the renowned scholar Xu Zhi was the sole exception.
In Chen Fan's residence, a special bed was prepared solely for Xu Zhi. Whenever Xu Zhi came to visit, the bed would be lowered for him to use, and after his departure, it would be hoisted up again. This demonstrated the profound depth of their friendship.
