Story:
During the Eastern Han Dynasty, Dong Zhuo, wielding his considerable power, dominated the government and planned to usurp the throne. Situ Wang Yun and his adopted daughter, Diao Chan, devised a plan to have Lu Bu assassinate Dong Zhuo.
Wang Yun first promised Diao Chan to Lu Bu, but then presented her as a concubine to Dong Zhuo. Enraged and feeling powerless when Dong Zhuo took Diao Chan, Lu Bu was conflicted.
Diao Chan then declared that Lu Bu's fame was 'like thunder piercing the ear,' meaning his reputation was widely known and admired, and she desired to spend her life with him.
