Story:
During the Warring States period, Lin Xiangru, a retainer of the eunuch Miao Xian in the state of Zhao, was sent by King Zhao to Qin with the rare He Shi Bi jade. With his wisdom and courage, he successfully returned the jade to Zhao, earning King Zhao's appreciation and being appointed as a high official.
Later, King Qin proposed a meeting with King Zhao in Mianchi, intending to coerce King Zhao into submission. Lin Xiangru and General Lian Po strongly advised King Zhao to attend. With clever planning, Lian Po exerted military pressure on King Qin with his bravery and skill in battle, while Lin Xiangru, with his eloquent speech and unwavering loyalty to King Zhao, ensured King Zhao avoided humiliation and returned safely to Zhao.
To commend Lin Xiangru, King Zhao appointed him as a Grand Councilor, a position even higher than General Lian Po. This displeased Lian Po greatly. He believed that he was the greatest hero for fighting bravely on the front lines for Zhao, while Lin Xiangru had only used his words to achieve a higher rank. Lian Po was indignant and resolved to humiliate Lin Xiangru.
Lin Xiangru heard about this and constantly avoided meeting Lian Po. On court days, he would claim illness and not attend. One day, Lin Xiangru went out on business and encountered Lian Po. Lian Po ordered his subordinates to block Lin Xiangru's path in various ways, forcing Lin Xiangru to return home. Lian Po became even more smug and publicized this everywhere.
When Lin Xiangru's retainers heard about it, they all wanted to leave. Lin Xiangru asked why, and they replied, "We work for you because we respect you as a truly noble gentleman, but now you are tolerating the arrogant Lian Po. We cannot bear it!" Lin Xiangru laughed heartily and asked, "Do you think King Qin is more powerful, or General Lian Po? I am not afraid of King Qin, so why would I be afraid of Lian Po? Qin currently dares not invade because they are intimidated by General Lian and me, who protect Zhao as the king's left and right arms. How can I disregard the nation's welfare for a small personal grudge?"
When Lian Po heard this, he was deeply ashamed. He bared his chest, carried a bundle of thorns on his back, and went to Lin Xiangru to apologize. From then on, they became sworn friends who would share life and death, working together with one heart to serve the nation.
