During the Tang Dynasty, after Liu Zongyuan passed the imperial examination and was recommended by Wang Shuweng to a higher position, Wang Shuweng's reform failed. Consequently, Liu Zongyuan was demoted to Yongzhou Sima. Later, he was transferred to be the governor of Liuzhou.
His close friend Liu Yuxi was also appointed as the governor of Leizhou, a region plagued by tribal unrest.
Out of concern for Liu Yuxi's family, Liu Zongyuan wrote to the emperor, requesting to swap positions with Liu Yuxi, demonstrating the profound bond of friends in adversity.
