During the Spring and Autumn period, when various states were at war, the state of Wu attacked and severely defeated the state of Chu.
Chu's minister, Shen Baoxu, traveled to the state of Qin to seek assistance. Duke Ai of Qin was hesitant and delayed sending troops to rescue Chu.
Shen Baoxu then "leaned against the court wall and cried day and night without ceasing, not letting a single sip of water pass his lips." He cried for seven days and seven nights, deeply moving Duke Ai of Qin, who then agreed to dispatch troops to aid Chu.
