During the reign of Emperor Wu of Han, Liu Xun, the emperor's grandson, was imprisoned due to his involvement in the Crown Prince Wei incident. The jailer, Bing Ji, went to great lengths to protect him.
When Emperor Wu ordered the execution of all prisoners in the jail, Bing Ji risked his own life to save them.
Later, Liu Xun ascended to the throne as Emperor Xuan. Bing Ji wisely kept quiet about his past efforts. Emperor Xuan held him in high esteem.
Wu Zun, a man from Chang'an, praised Bing Ji for his dedicated protection of Emperor Xuan, saying that his meritorious deeds were immeasurable (gōng dé wú liàng).
