During the Ming Dynasty, Hai Rui was renowned for his uprightness and impartiality. He skillfully punished the arrogant son of Governor Hu Xianzong, leaving the pampered youth with a bitter lesson.
Meanwhile, Emperor Ming Shizong spent years secluded in Xiyuan, chanting scriptures and praying for immortality and eternal life.
Hai Rui, risking his own life, bravely submitted a memorial to the emperor. In his plea, he earnestly hoped that Emperor Ming Shizong would "翻然悔悟" (suddenly awaken to his errors) and restore vigorous governance to the court. As a consequence of his audacity, Hai Rui was thrown into prison.
