Story:

During a time of great danger for Chu Baigong, Zhuang Zishan bid farewell to his mother, preparing to sacrifice himself in Baigong's stead.

As he neared the court, Zhuang hesitated three times, unable to descend from his chariot. Those accompanying him asked if he was afraid and suggested he could turn back.

Zhuang replied, 'Fear is my private matter, but to die for my ruler is a public duty. A true gentleman would never let personal feelings or private interests jeopardize public affairs.' With that, he resolutely went to face death on behalf of Baigong.
