During the Warring States period, the renowned philosopher Zhuangzi was a man of great talent. King Wei of Chu, wishing to invite him to assist in governance, sent two envoys with numerous pearls and silks.
They found Zhuangzi fishing by the Puyang River, living as a recluse.
Zhuangzi, speaking metaphorically to the envoys, said he preferred to be like a tortoise wagging its tail in the mud, preserving its life and living a secluded existence, rather than being enshrined and revered after death. The envoys, understanding his intent, had no choice but to depart disheartened.
