During the Chu-Han Contention, Liu Bang, along with Han Xin and Peng Yue, combined forces to besiege Xiang Yu, who was defeated and committed suicide at Wu River.
The various feudal lords and Liu Bang's ministers all urged Liu Bang to declare himself emperor. Liu Bang humbly said that only a virtuous person could become emperor, and those who engaged in empty words and false discourse could not ascend to the throne.
Under the strong insistence of the crowd, Liu Bang offered sacrifices to heaven and ascended the throne on the north bank of the Si River.
