During the reign of Emperor Wu of Han, the Xiongnu Chanyu (leader) came to power and wished to improve relations with the Han Dynasty. Emperor Wu sent Su Wu as an envoy to the Xiongnu.
However, due to internal changes within the Xiongnu, the Chanyu detained Su Wu and subjected him to various torments. He even sent surrendered generals Zhang Sheng and Li Ling to persuade him to yield.
But Su Wu remained steadfast and unyielding, demonstrating noble character and unswerving integrity, vowing not to surrender even unto death. He consequently earned the respect and admiration of many.
