During the Spring and Autumn period, Prince Wei of Chu successfully usurped the throne and became King Ling. He launched large-scale attacks against the states of Qi and Lai, executed those he disliked internally, and lavishly constructed magnificent palaces.

Zizhang, an official, advised King Ling, hoping he would become a sagacious ruler. However, King Ling dismissed Zizhang's counsel, stating that his advice could only serve as 'tián' (jade ornaments hanging at the sides of a crown to block ears).

Zizhang then retorted, 'If admonition is treated as mere earplugs, it would be better to use rhino horns or ivory for that purpose.'
