Towards the end of the Xia Dynasty, its last ruler, Jie, was extremely cruel. He exercised tyrannical rule domestically, causing widespread resentment among the people, who lived in dire poverty.
Tang, the ruler of the small vassal state of Shang, was a wise monarch. He sought assistance from the great sage Yi Yin, and the Shang state grew unprecedentedly powerful.
When Tang saw that the time was ripe, the ruler and his ministers worked together with one heart and one mind, eventually overthrowing the Xia Dynasty.
