Liu Lanzhi married Jiao Zhongqing. She worked diligently and without complaint in the Jiao family, but her difficult mother-in-law couldn't tolerate her and insisted on sending her back home.
Jiao Zhongqing had no choice but to agree with her that he would not remarry and she would not remarry, pledging their loyalty to each other until death. After Liu Lanzhi returned home, her elder brother, who had a fiery temper, forced her to marry again.
She had no option but to drown herself. Upon learning of her death, Jiao Zhongqing also committed suicide by hanging.
