Story:

Ji Kang, a figure from the Wei and Jin dynasties, harbored a deep yearning for a life of rural simplicity. He possessed a noble character; his friend Wang Rong once remarked, "I've known Ji Kang for over twenty years, and I've never witnessed anything that could truly delight or infuriate him."

Despite his impoverished family background, Ji Kang often supported his household by working as a blacksmith.

One day, the influential official Zhong Hui came to visit him. Ji Kang, however, continued his work under a tree, swinging his hammer as if no one were there. After a long wait, Zhong Hui eventually departed.

When his friend Shan Tao recommended him for an official post, Ji Kang penned a letter to sever ties, declaring his unwavering resolve. He wrote, "It is like a wild deer, never having been domesticated. If it is brought out among people, over time it will reveal its untamed spirit, break free from its tethers, run wild, and plunge into danger. Though it may be adorned with golden bridles and jade harnesses and partake of fine delicacies, it constantly yearns for the long forests and lush grass."
