Legend has it that during the reign of Emperor Ming of Han, Zhang Shao, a scholar from Nancheng, Ruzhou, and Fan Shi, a scholar from Shanyang, Chuzhou, journeyed together to Luoyang for the imperial examinations.
They became sworn brothers and vowed to meet at Zhang Shao's home for the Double Ninth Festival the following year.
Fan Shi, due to business, missed their appointed date and committed suicide. His soul traveled a thousand li to meet Zhang Shao. Zhang Shao also traveled a thousand li to pay his respects to Fan Shi's corpse, and then he too committed suicide.
