When he was thirteen, his mother fell ill and remained sick for three months. He attended to her without closing his eyes, often holding millet and going out to divine, praying to the deities for his mother's protection. Sometimes, he would kowtow until his forehead bled, becoming noticeably thin.

The villagers praised him as a filial son.
