During the Spring and Autumn period, Duke Huan of Qi sent his prime minister, Guan Zhong, to assemble the armies of Chen and Cao states to jointly attack the state of Song.
On the way, Guan Zhong met Ning Qi, a cowherd. Recognizing his great talent, Guan Zhong wrote a letter to Duke Huan of Qi to recommend him.
Ning Qi was riding his ox and singing a song that expressed his grievances and ambition. Duke Huan of Qi, upon hearing Ning Qi's unconventional song, had Ning Qi arrested.
However, after questioning him and discovering his profound knowledge and wisdom, the Duke appointed him as a Grand Master (Dafu).
